The story is set exactly 400 years in the future in a new age world. Earth has been renamed as "Planet Technology", and is controlled by MAC Corporation. On Planet Technology, mainstream commercial conformity reigns, in which MAC Kids watch the same movies, listen to computer-generated music, wear the same clothes and hold the same thoughts and opinions. Books are forbidden, and libraries are unknown.
In the newest graduating class is black sheep Dewey, who has dreams and hears strange words in his head, most of which are poems and litrature long since lost, though he does not understand their significance. Despite his teacher's advice, Dewey refuses to conform like the rest of his classmates.
